PWA’s Blood Transfusion Services was established in 1982. The department of Blood Transfusion Services has been an integral part of the services of PWA. PWA’s Voluntary Blood Bank established under Blood Transfusion Services is registered by the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA). Over the years, with the hard work and dedication, PWA’s Voluntary Blood Bank has become the largest single outlet blood bank in the country with the daily output of around 270 blood bags According to Islamabad Blood Transfusion Authority (IBTA), there were 20 blood banks in Islamabad and Rawalpindi and their combined input from July 2015 to June 2016 was approximately 68000 blood bags. While in the same period, the single outlet of PWA at Dr Ruth K. M. Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi collected and processed more than 74000 blood bags. These figures not only prove the tremendous efforts of PWA toward a better society but reflect upon our main objective of serving people with the facilities that are otherwise not provided.

PWA’s Voluntary Blood Bank provides component therapy in the form of packed cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelets on exchange basis, completely free of cost. To ensure the provision of safe blood, each blood bag goes through a careful screening process, being screened for HIV I & II, Hepatitis B & C, Malaria and Syphilis in accordance with WHO guidelines. With the advancement of technology PWA has further upgraded it’s screening methodology from Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) to Chemiluminescent Immunosorbent Assay (CLIA) which further adds to quality and safety of blood provided by PWA. All of this could not have been possible without the continuous help of our generous donors who contributed in the form of blood and finance. We would never have been able to achieve such great milestones without their unquantifiable support. We hope that our generous donors and well-wishers will continue to aid us in our quest to provide the best quality of service to the people of Karachi.
